Open Network and Sharing Center

Click on Change Adapter Settings

Press Alt to bring up the menu bar if it is not already shown and click on Advanced

Click on Advanced Settings

In Advanced Settings move Local Area Connection or Ethernet to the top of the list

Conclusion

Changing this will prioritize where windows will pull internet connections from. On windows 7 your network icon in the notification area will still be the wireless bars, but should be pulling from wired first if you have completed the steps above.
