Introduction

Let's say you have a Word document (or a similar file) someone opened and forgot to close and now you can't edit it because it's locked! What to do?!

Steps (6 total)

Disconnect User

Disconnect user who is associated with the locked file from the machine they are currently using. (Normally you get the username from the lock error pop-up)

Connect to your File Server's File Services

Go to your file serve r– Right Click My computer – Click Manage – Expand Server Manager – Click Roles – Click File Services

Click on Share and Storage management

Click on the Share and Storage management.

Close open sessions

Under the actions menu on the right Click on “Manages Sessions…” , look for any related open sessions and close all of them

Close Open Files

Under actions menu on the right Click on “Manages Open Files…” , look for any related open sessions and close all of them

Open your file

At this point you should be ok to open your shared file now to edit.
