Introduction
Let's say you have a Word document (or a similar file) someone opened and forgot to close and now you can't edit it because it's locked! What to do?!
Steps (6 total)
Disconnect user who is associated with the locked file from the machine they are currently using. (Normally you get the username from the lock error pop-up)
Go to your file serve r– Right Click My computer – Click Manage – Expand Server Manager – Click Roles – Click File Services
Click on the Share and Storage management.
Under the actions menu on the right Click on “Manages Sessions…” , look for any related open sessions and close all of them
Under actions menu on the right Click on “Manages Open Files…” , look for any related open sessions and close all of them
At this point you should be ok to open your shared file now to edit.
Conclusion
If you read this and want to add more detail feel free... I figured I would share this for those who either forgot or never had to do this
